ZELLMILL.CBS 09/02/04 8:55 AM-DLR 1:14 (no recording) Zell Miller unplugged. This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. The podium event of the night at the Republican Convention was the speech by Senator Zell Miller, Democrat turned anti-Democrat, who accused his party of being motivated by PARTISAN POLITICS. TAPE: "Motivated more by partisan politics than by national security, today's Democratic leaders see America as an occupier, not a liberator. And nothing makes this Marine madder than someone calling American troops occupiers rather than liberators." :20 That really got the crowd going, but I just wanted to share with you a few quotes here that maybe Senator Miller wasn't aware of. (QUOTE) "I would be the first to acknowledge we allowed the liberation (of Iraq) to subside into an occupation. And I think that was a grave error." Richard Perle, former chair of the Defense Policy Board, BBC Radio, May 27, 2004. (QUOTE) "They told us, 'Liberation now' and then they made it occupation." Ahmed Chalabi, Chairman of the Iraqi National Congress, Philadelphia Inquirer May 29, 2003 (QUOTE) "Some Iraqis are beginning to regard us as occupiers and not liberators..." Paul Bremer, Coalition Administrator, Financial Times, September 23, 2003 My only point here is that Senator Miller didn't go far enough in accusing the Democrats of using the word "occupier." Because, had he done a little more research, he could have accused them of plagiarism too. Now this! ~C:\works\files\ZELLMILL.CBS
