SALMON.CBS 08/13/04 8:28 AM-DLR 1:23 Stalking the wild salmon. This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. There is nothing more tasty than fresh caught salmon - and nothing better for your body. Salmon is high in omega-3 fatty acids, which control cholesterol. But salmon, like other fish, spend a lot of time swimming around and they tend to pick up chemicals as they do it. And the latest chemical they're picking up goes by the initials PBDE. You may remember the stories about another chemical - PCB, polychlorinated biphenyls, which are known to cause cancer and were banned some years ago. They're proven to be pretty stubborn DESPITE the ban, showing up in farm raised salmon. But they're banned, so over time, with a little luck, they may just go away. PBDEs, however, or polybrominated diphenyl ethers, are not banned. They are known to harm neurological development in young children. And THEY are showing up not so much in FARM-raised salmon, but in wild Chinook salmon. Chinook salmon that have been ranging all over the ocean, un-penned and carefree. The levels are measured in parts per billion, and no one knows how toxic the stuff is, so no one is saying don't eat salmon. But what the researchers ARE saying is that once you start the wide spread use of a chemical, you can't control where it goes. You might think its just going into computers or foam seat cushions or synthetic fabrics, when in fact it could also be on the end of your fork. And what are PBDEs used for? Well, they're fire retardants. And therein lies the silver lining. The day may come when eating a lot of salmon not only cuts your cholesterol, but vastly reduces your chances of catching fire.
