OSCARS.CBS 01/25/05 8:42 AM-DLR 1:25 Must we see all these movies? This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. Sponsored by Posture D, calcium plus phosphorous for healthy bones. Posture D in the Orange box. The Oscar nominations are out - instantly dividing America into two countries - those who've seen the films that everybody is talking about and those who picked wrong and have nothing to say. Some of us have a lot of catching up to do. Because we want to be culturally literate; and in America, film is the most celebrated form of culture. Because film is uniquely able to create utterly-convincing illusions. Unfortunately, the only nominee I've seen so far is "The Incredibles." Everything else sounded too depressing. For $8.50 ... I want to leave HAPPY. But it doesn't matter - you've got to see them all. Although, why pay good money to be subjected to illusions on the screen - when we're getting' it free everyday? I was just running down the list of new stories ... Elections in Iraq; six days away. But ARE they really elections? Can you have an election when there's a war on? Who knows? Today the Senate is holding a vigorous debate over whether Condoleezza Rice should be Secretary of State. Yet we all know she's guaranteed to be confirmed. So is this a REAL debate, or not? Who knows? Last week the President gave an inaugural address where he appeared to be launching a new world-wide crusade for democracy, but the next day, his aides were telling reporters, NO, he didn't mean to announce a new policy, it was just the same old policy, just with scarier words. It's ALL an illusion! All I know for sure is that Howard Hughes ... looks JUST like that nice Leonardo DiCaprio. Now this. ~C:\works\files\OSCARS.CBS
