MCGREEVE.CBS 08/13/04 7:46 AM-DLR 1:11 Handling the truth. This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. You don't hear announcements like this every day from a sitting governor. TAPE: "I engaged in an adult consensual affair with another man." New Jersey Governor James McGreevey will resign November 15th because of an adulterous affair with a man he had put on the state payroll. Now, it's not like New Jersey is a stranger to government scandals, and McGreevey's own administration was certainly having its share - including questions about the competence of one Golan Cipel, who the governor had appointed as his special assistant on homeland security. But most people had no clue that Mr. Cipel's appointment was anything more than just another in a STRING of bad appointments by the Governor. Most people had no clue they were lovers. We can only guess what might have happened if the affair had been heterosexual. But in THIS case, there would be no waffling. TAPE: "It was wrong, it was foolish, it was inexcusable." And this, I think, tells us something. Here's a man who is the son of a marine drill sergeant, who is married, who has children, who is not only Catholic, but who's met the Pope, and who even came out publicly against gay marriage. And after working like crazy to become governor, he finds himself forced to resign two years into his term over a sexual affair with another man. If being gay is merely a CHOICE, why in heaven's name wouldn't the Governor of New Jersey have chosen to be heterosexual for just two more years?? Unless it isn't: TAPE: "This is my truth. I am a gay American." Now this. ~C:\works\files\MCGREEVE.CBS
