IRAQWARN.CBS 09/28/04 8:40 AM-DLR 1:25 A guy who makes up his mind. This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. The latest Washington Post-ABC Poll is pretty clear: a majority of Americans - 51% - say the war in Iraq was not worth fighting, and 50% say they disapprove of the job the President is doing on the economy. But it doesn't matter because according to the poll, if the vote were held today, the President would win. The reason? Voters think the President is decisive, whereas they think that John Kerry is wishy-washy. And while Kerry may have a good mind, they feel that even a good mind has to be made up once in a while, even if they don't agree with the result. And that could explain a lot. For example, we already know that the President had intelligence reports warning that Iraq had an arsenal of banned weapons. And that those reports turned out to be wrong. What we DIDN'T know, until an article published yesterday in the Washington post, was that the President also had OTHER intelligence reports before the war. Including one predicting that an American-led invasion would result in a "deeply divided Iraqi society prone to violent internal conflict" and that a war "would increase sympathy across the Islamic world for some terrorist objectives, at least in the short run." Unlike the weapons warnings, THESE warning proved to be accurate. And yet - while we all heard clear decisive statements about the weapons before the war, I can't recall hearing any of these other warnings before the war. Even though both warnings went to the President. But considering the poll results, that's not surprising. Because as the polls teach us, voters can't stand leaders who are wishy-washy. ~C:\works\files\IRAQWARN.CBS
