DEBATE4.CBS 10/01/04 1:11 AM-DLR 1:26 It turns out that the candidates got some of the facts wrong. This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. According to an Associated Press analysis of Thursday's debate, some of the statement by the candidates were not entirely accurate. And no wonder, since under the ground rules, they couldn't bring notes in For example, Kerry said that because of too little spending on Homeland Security, New York had to close down the subway when the Republican convention was there. Well, some exits near the convention were closed down, but not the whole subway. As for the President, he said that 75 percent of known al-Qaida leaders have been brought to justice - except that al Qaeda is able to reproduce itself so that figure may be meaningless. What he was actually referring to was the operatives known to have been in Al Qaeda on September 11th. Kerry was also a little sloppy in characterizing the President's tax cut as for the wealthiest people in America - when in fact a lot of middle class people got something back too. Just not as much. He also said the United States has spent $200 billion on the Iraq war, but he appears to be including anticipated spending for next year. The actual figure to date is 120 billion. And of course Kerry got the Pottery Barn rule wrong, quoting it as "you break it, you fix it." The actual Pottery Barn rule as stated by Colin Powell is, "If you break it, you buy it." But if we could've gotten out of Iraq just by BUYING it, we'd be home by now. By the ACTUAL Pottery Barn rule as stated on the pottery barn web site is "everything you need for every room in your home." That's the one the looters evidently were following.
