The welcome mat is out.  This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network.
You keep hearing that the Republican Convention is being run by religious zealots - that if you're in favor of gay rights, or reproductive freedom for women, or just a flat out liberal, you're not welcome. 
But we've seen John McCain saying nice things about Islam, we saw the Bush daughters cracking a joke about Sex in the City, and finally Arnold Schwarzenegger, who gathered everybody up in a great big bear hug:
ARNOLD:  "Here we can respectfully disagree, and still be patriotic, still be Americans, and still be good Republicans."
The welcome mat is out.  If you believe that government should be accountable to the people, he said, you are a Republican.  Well, heck, that's in the Constitution, so that's easy.
ARNOLD:  "If you believe that your family knows how to spend your money better than the government does, then you are a Republican."
That's easy too - heck I hear even Democratic families saying I wish we had some of that money that's going up in smoke in Iraq:
ARNOLD:  "And ladies and gentlemen if you believe we must be fierce and relentless and terminate terrorism, then you are a Republican."
Yup!  Nobody likes terrorists.  And notice - no slams against America's depraved culture, and not ONE reference to GAY MARRIAGE or gay people:
ARNOLD:   And to those critics who are so pessimistic about our economy, I say, don't be economic girly men."
OK, there was that.  BUT- presumably, even if you ARE ...whatever he said ... ("Economic girly men") Yes... I'm betting the Republican party is big enough for you too.   Now this. ~C:\works\files\ARNOLD2.CBS
