ABUGHRAI.CBS 08/26/04 9:21 AM-DLR 1:22 Abu Ghraib veterans for truth. This is Dave Ross on the CBS Radio Network. The army's issued its report on the abuses at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. I say abuses - the actual term in the report is non-doctrinal interrogating techniques. — Like holding an unmuzzled dog within a foot of two screaming teenagers as part of a little contest. The idea was to scare them until a certain body reflex kicked in. On one level, probably just the next step in reality television. But the Army report labeled them "criminal", carried out by a small group of soldiers and civilian contractors who were "morally corrupt." It's an important case... even if these prisoners are considered the enemy, just remember: every soldier knows that HE might one day be a POW, and when you find yourself in that situation, the Geneva Convention can come in very handy. The report documents 44 "non-doctrinal" incidents at Abu Ghraib. 26 cases involved nudity and humiliation, ten cases involved outright sexual assault. It's brought calls for Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld's resignation. I'll leave that debate to others. All I'm asking is that we get the details straight. Because we know what's going to happen. Years from now, in some future campaign, there's going to be a group called Abu Ghraib Veterans for Truth. And they're going to say it didn't happen, and if it did, it didn't happen they way so-and-so said it happened. It would sure save time if a bunch of us just clipped the articles today, and kept them somewhere so that 35 years from now, we can pull them out and have a definitive answer as to who's telling the truth. Now this. ~C:\works\files\ABUGHRAI.CBS
